analyzing av's top 25

I always like to look at top lists of the year, because I know that I
always will miss something. Like I did the year Interpol put out Turn
On The Bright Lights. I think it was a year or two later that I finally
stumbled upon it while sitting in the back of Farrell's car. Anyway,
A.V club put out their top 25 list and I will now critique it (or at
least all the stuff that is available on lala)

http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-top-25-albums-of-2009,35918/

1. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix: I've listened to Phoenix before,
and I've never thought they were bad, they just never really grasped my
attention. I can't say that this album is any different. It is a
really smooth album and kind of sounds like they've been listening to
some earlier Animal Collective for the past few months.

2. Grizzley Bear - Vecatimest : Sometime during the year there was a
nice debate about how Grizzley Bear is Stone Temple Pilots. This album
is not on Lala as anything more than 30 second snippets of time, so I
can't really comment.

3. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion: I bought this album,
but I never listen to it. This is the first time I've reviewed it in
months. The songs are full of really good sounds. I listened to this
over at the Gym. Some of the folkes liked it. To others, it reminded
them of the Lion king.

4. Sunset Rubdown, Dragon: As in most bands, you really have to like the
Singer, or get past any annoyances you may find in their singing. But
since Spener Krug sings in a very exaggerative manner, it's not going to
be easy for me. Krug must go back for stage for oxygen (like Bon Scott
and Angus Young used to do) between each song. But hell, I made it past
the strange tone of the dude singer in Blonde Redhead, I can probably
make it past Spener's and start to really enjoy this album. The songs
are epic, verging on what The National did with Boxer. Yeah, I'm really
starting to dig this album.

5. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca: I write an opinion of this album on BB
before stating I liked it, and I do, just low on the list. I think the
issue for me is that it is just too complex for it's own good. The Rush
of Indie Pop.

6. Neko Case - Middle Cyclone: Neko's voice is very pleasant to listen
to. The songs arrangements are interesting and mellow.

7. P.O.S. - Never Better: I am not qualified to discuss rap albums. I
do love the percussion on this album - It's marching bandish, oh and the
violins. I keep finding my self bouncing to the rhythm on my fitness
ball while I work.

8. Converge - Axe To Fall: First thoughts is "Seriously, another album
with a song call 'Reap What You Sow'" Second thought: "It's like punk
rock with constant guitar solos." Third thought "Oh, double kick
pedals". I made it to song 5, but this marks the first album on this
list I couldn't listen to all the way through.

9. Brother Ali - Us: He's rapping about how awesome he is. Now, where
have I heard that before? Oh yeah, every other fucking rapper. (See
initial comments on #7)

10. Andrew Bird - Noble Beast:

11. The Antlers -Hospice: I also commented on this album some time ago.
This is on the top of my "most sad depressing albums of 2009".

12. Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3: The first song is good and now I'm really
liking the 4th song "Run This Town". The guitar is repetitive, but the
riff is really good.

13.

14. Future Of The Left - Travels With Myself And Another. This, of
course, is my favorite album of the year.

15. Art Brut - Vs. Satan - This is Indie album. The "singer" usually
just speaks melodically in a British accent. Hell, I did this years ago
on my "First Day Of The New Way" album, the track titled "Million Dollar
Man" which was put out in 1992 -- so they're a bit behind the times.
However, with lyrics like "Is this an new bruise, or has it been there
forever?" shows that they have some sense of humor. I find this to be
listenable.

16. Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle - Not on lala,
thank god.

17. Lucero - 1372 Overton Park - Kind of like Bruce Springsteen meets
The Boss

18. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
: Floaty, fluffy, poppy and indie. Kind of in the same realm as The
Stone Roses. Not sure if the singer could ever own a house, he's
definitively more of a condo or apartment person.

22. Fall Out Boy -Folie À Deux: Nothing new and very interesting pop.
Like a very light pop-punk with keyboards.

25 Japandroids - Post-Nothing: I'd say this is ok.

I'm done for now. I was hopeful and motivated to start this thing, but
now I feel like it's work. So I should stop.

I would like to ask what people's favorite albums from 2000 - 2010. I
will post mine when I finally recover this post.
